Knowledge : 112 th years anniversary the King of Siam at Taplow Court

เมื่อวันพุธที่ 29 เมษายน ที่ผ่านมา สถานเอกอัครราชทูตไทยประจำกรุงลอนดอน โดย ฯพณฯ นายกิตติ วะสีนนท์ ร่วมกับ บริษัท SGI International Ltd. นำโดย Robert Samuels ประธานองค์การเผยแผ่ศาสนาพุทธของประเทศญี่ปุ่นในสหราชอาณาจักร จัดงานนิทรรศการสายสัมพันธ์ 112 ปี ราชวงศ์ไทยกับ Taplow Court โดยมี Dr Orapin Dawson ตัวแทนจากสมาคมแองโกไทยเป็นผู้ประสานงานในการจัดงานครั้งนี้ด้วย

ในปัจจุบัน Taplow Court เป็นศูนย์พุทธศึกษาพร้อมห้องสมุดเกี่ยวกับพุทธศาสนาและปรัชญาเอเชีย ที่สำคัญแห่งหนึ่งในสหราชอาณาจักร โดยสถานที่นี้เป็นส่วนหนึ่งของ บริษัท SGI-UK (Soka Gakkai International UK) เนื่องในโอกาสครบรอบ 112 ปี ที่พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว และ พระบรมวงศานุวงศ์ทรงเสด็จพระราชดำเนินเยือนสถานที่แห่งนี้ พร้อม ทรงโปรดให้มีการฉายพระบรมฉายาลักษณ์ร่วมกัน ทางสถานเอกอัครราชทูตไทยจึงนำพระบรมฉายาลักษณ์เหล่านั้นมาแสดงในนิทรรศการในโอกาสนี้ เพื่อแสดงให้เห็นถึงความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างราชวงศ์ไทยและ Taplow Court ที่เคยมีมานานกว่า 100 ปี (ตั้งแต่ปี ค.ศ. 1897 ) โดยแขกผู้มีเกียรติ์ในงานได้รับเชิญจากสถานทูตไทยเพื่อเป็นตัวแทนของราชวงศ์ไทย คือ หม่อมราชวงศ์นริศรา จักรพงษ์ และ หม่อมราชวงศ์สายสวัสดี สวัสดิวัตน์ ทอมสัน ทั้งนี้ยังมีแขกผู้เกียรติ์จากทางองค์กร SGI และตัวแทนจากรัฐบาลท้องถิ่นอาทิ Councillor Raja M. Zarai, the Mayor of Slough

Taplow Court & Royal Thai Embassy are co-hosting a Reception on Wed 29th April, 6.30 - 8.30pm

Featuring an Exhibition of the relationship of Thai Royal Family and Taplow Court from 1897 to date. King Chula Rama V and Crown Prince Vajiravut and other sons, stayed there for the whole summer 1897. Photos of King Chula & his sons at the Embassy were taken at Taplow Court while they were staying there. There was also be a small exhibtion of Khung Bhumipol's photographs collection.

There were about 150 guests, including Mayor of Maidenhead, other dignitaries and local Press attending.

During the Summer of 1897 King Chulalongkorn of Siam (Thailand) spent 10 weeks in Britain. He had arrived at Spithead in the royal yacht the ‘Mahachakri’. During the first week of August the King stayed at BuckinghamPalace.

As well as official duties the King visited KewGardens, Greenwich Observatory, London Zoo and The London Tower. He also went to HarrowSchool where one of his sons was being educated and to Osborne on the Isle of Wight to visit Queen Victoria. His English was good so an interpreter was not necessary.

On Friday August 6th, the King left London for Taplow Court, his country house for the rest of his stay. Willy and Ettie Grenfell (later Lord and Lady Desborough) had let their home whilst the family was on holiday in Normandy. On route, the King visited Sandhurst where his eldest son was preparing for the military academy.

Taplow Station was carpeted and decorated with flags and hundreds of local people turned out to welcome him. The Siamese royal ensign was displayed on the roof of Taplow Court and the King enjoyed “the repose afforded by the secluded position of the mansion”.

The King made country house visits and spent a week in Scotland receiving civic hospitality in Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Back at Taplow Court on August 19th, the Maidenhead Engineers’ and Fishermens’ annual regatta took place. The King presented a silver-gilt challenge Lotus Bowl as a prize for dinghy racing.

September 21st was the Royal Birthday. The porch and hall at Taplow Court were decorated with flags, garlands and Japanese lanterns. A garden party was held the following day with music by the Siamese Naval Band.

The King presented a beautiful Siamese Cup to TaplowSchool’s athletic club. The Cup is still presented every year to the most outstanding athlete, boy or girl, at St Nicolas’ School.

The Royal visit ended at the beginning of October. The King tipped the servants generously before he left.

King Chulalongkorn (1853-1910) reigned for 42 years. He is remembered as an enlightened monarch who modernised his country and placed great emphasis on education. He forged links with the West whilst preserving Siam’s independence.

In recent times the link between Taplow Court and Thailand has been renewed with the visits of Thai dignitaries. The present King, Bhumibol Adulyadej, the grandson of King Chulalongkorn, is an enthusiastic photographer. And in 1991 an exhibition of his ‘The Land of Gentle Smiles’, was held at Taplow Court.
